JIM BUDREAU opened up his own office in 1994 with a focus on federal and state criminal law, appeals, complex civil litigation and employment law. Jim has taught at Harvard Law School, clerked for a judge and helped run Harvard's Hale and Door employment law clinic. Jim practiced of counsel with Oteri, Weinberg and Lawson, a firm specializing in complex federal trial work, for over fifteen years before joining Carney and Bassil in 2008.

In the courtroom, Jim has had a number of high profile victories. He obtained an acquittal in a first degree murder case for a client four years after having won acquittals for the same client in a separate homicide case. Jim has won acquittals in complex criminal conspiracies in federal courts and felonies in state courts throughout Massachusetts and New England. In Vermont Jim recently won an acquittal for a Canadian national in federal court,. who was accused of laundering criminal proceeds through his business.

Jim also represents clients in post conviction matters where he has obtained numerous reversals and new trials for clients in both federal and state court. He actively practices in federal court in New Hampshire and Burlington, Vermont where he regularly represents Canadian nationals and businesses.

Outside of the courtroom, Jim has been on numerous Boards including the youth advocacy group Sociedad Latina and a computer educational program for under privileged youth. Jim is also on the Board of Directors for the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys.

Carney & Bassil has approximately ten lawyers and, along with Jim, represents individual and corporate clients in cases ranging from complex state and federal criminal matters to regulatory and licensing hearings and family law litigation.
