Case Results

Clients who are facing regulatory investigation, criminal charges or other potentially life-changing events need a dedicated, experienced and skilled advocate at their side. Over the last two decades, Jim Budreau has represented hundreds of companies and individuals confronted with criminal investigation, indictments, trial and appeals. Jim has tried and appealed dozens of complicated cases in state and federal court. He has represented clients before regulatory boards and filed suits against multinational corporations and international banks. In each case, Jim has passionately defended his client's interests, been thoroughly prepared and produced quality results.

Preparation, experience and integrity have always been the hallmark of quality representation.  Jim brings these qualities plus effective court room skills, legal acumen and strategic vision to each case. Over the years, Jim has convinced multiple juries that clients charged with first degree murder were innocent, judges that convictions should be reversed or vacated, and regulatory bodies that his view was correct.  Just recently, Jim argued before the First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston and won a reversal of his client's conviction. In another federal case, Jim convinced a jury that his client was not guilty of a charge that would have resulted in a life sentence.

Success is not, however, just defined in tems of an acquittal or judgment, but is often negotiated to meet client needs or avoid more serious consequences. While it is important to retain a lawyer who has excellent trial skills, it is equally important for that attorney to listen and appreciate both the client's need and the factual and legal realities or each case. Jim brings both qualities to every case he defends or litigates.

Successfully challenging use of substitute pathologist in homicide case by anticipating Supreme Court ruling in Melendez-Diaz through Crawford Sixth Amendment analysis.
Reversing conviction of defendant though targeted analysis of record to show improper prosecutorial argument in closing.
High profile homicide trial that resulted in acquittal of client on all charges. Jim requested that the verdict be taken on client under seal despite fact that jury was still deliberating on co-defendant. When the trial court later declared a mistrial based upon juror misconduct, the acquittal was preserved because of Mr. Budreau’s anticipatory legal tactic. The co-defendant was later convicted in a retrial.
Four-year struggle against town accused of racial animus toward client resulted in substantial settlement, and serious reorganization of management structure.
